Karin Merx, 2022, Portrait Frida Kahlo, Digital Art
In November 2022 I watched a documentary hosted by Jeroen Krabbé. It was a very moving series about the life and art of Frida Kahlo. It was more about her dramatic life and how art came to her rescue. As always, that is the power of art. Bet what deeply touched me, was how she managed that through all her pain, because of a debilitating disease and on top of that a horrific accident. Medical doctors who messed up, her lover who had a big appetite when it came to women yet, she took all she had and devoted it to her art.
In a time when women were not accepted as artists, as it was, and still is, a world ruled by mainly, men, Frida was able to go her own way, separate from her famous husband. He did encourage her and loved her. Frida Kahlo died at age 47 when the pain in her body had become unbearable.
This portrait is inspired by that emotion I felt. Power, resilience and a zest for life. The kingfisher represents freedom, courage, adventure, and balance. The butterflies represent the multiple transformations Kahlo went through.
This limited edition art print is different from the original oil painting I made.
